음과 양은 무엇일까요?

서로 다르지만 함께 있습니다

서로 다르지만, 하나를 생각하면 다른 하나도 자연스럽게 떠오릅니다.

음과 양도 이런 관계를 설명하는 전통적인 개념입니다.[1]

음과 양은 서로 구별되는 두 측면입니다.

하지만 완전히 따로 떨어진 두 개의 세계처럼 보지는 않습니다.

서로의 관계 속에서 함께 이해합니다.

음과 양은 변할 수 있습니다

음과 양은 한자리에 영원히 고정되어 있는 상태가 아닙니다.

상황과 흐름에 따라 서로 교대하고, 상대적으로 늘어나거나 줄어들며 변화한다고 설명합니다.[1]

하루에도 밝은 시간이 지나면 어두운 시간이 찾아옵니다.

계속 움직이기만 할 수 없고, 움직임 뒤에는 쉼도 있습니다.

음과 양에서 중요한 것은 하나의 이름을 붙여 고정하는 것이 아니라 관계와 변화를 함께 보는 것입니다.

어느 한쪽이 더 좋은 것은 아닙니다

양이 더 좋은 것이고 음이 더 나쁜 것이라는 뜻은 아닙니다.

음과 양은 선과 악을 나누는 기준도 아닙니다.

또 사람을 남성적인 성격과 여성적인 성격으로 고정해서 나누는 말도 아닙니다.

서로 다른 두 측면을 바라보는 중립적인 개념으로 이해하면 됩니다.

사주에서는 어디에서 볼까요?

사주를 이루는 천간과 지지는 각각 음과 양으로 분류됩니다.[2]

지금은 어떤 글자가 음이고 어떤 글자가 양인지 외울 필요는 없습니다.

먼저 이것만 기억하면 됩니다.

음과 양은 서로 다르지만 연결되어 있고, 관계 속에서 변화하는 두 측면입니다.

그리고 사주에서는 천간과 지지를 구분하는 가장 기초적인 분류 가운데 하나로 사용됩니다.

글자의 음양만으로 한 사람의 성격이나 삶 전체를 단정할 수는 없습니다.

Different, but connected

Think about light and darkness.

They are different, but thinking about one naturally helps us notice the other.

Yin and Yang are traditional concepts for describing this kind of relationship.[1]

Yin and Yang are two different aspects.

But they are not treated as two completely separate worlds.

They are understood in relation to one another.

Yin and Yang can change

Yin and Yang are not permanently frozen in place.

They are described as alternating, changing, and increasing or decreasing relative to each other as conditions change.[1]

Light gives way to darkness over the course of a day.

Activity is followed by rest.

The important idea is not to attach a fixed label to everything.

It is to notice relationship and change.

One side is not better than the other

Yang does not mean “better,” and Yin does not mean “worse.”

Yin and Yang are not a scale of good and bad.

They are also not fixed labels for male and female personalities.

A simple way to understand them is as neutral words for two different but related aspects.

Where do we see them in Saju?

The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches used in Saju are each classified as Yin or Yang.[2]

You do not need to memorize which characters belong to each group yet.

For now, remember this:

Yin and Yang are different but connected aspects that are understood through relationship and change.

In Saju, Yin and Yang are one of the basic ways the Stems and Branches are classified.

A Yin or Yang label by itself does not define a person’s personality or whole life.
