오행은 무엇일까요?

다섯 이름에서 시작합니다

목(木), 화(火), 토(土), 금(金), 수(水).

오행은 이 다섯 범주에서 시작합니다.[1]

처음에는 다섯 이름만 익혀도 충분합니다.

각 오행에 어떤 성격이나 직업, 색깔이 연결되는지까지 한꺼번에 외울 필요는 없습니다.

다섯 가지 물건만 뜻하지는 않습니다

이름만 보면 목은 나무, 화는 불처럼 보입니다.

하지만 오행을 실제 물건 다섯 개의 목록으로만 이해하지는 않습니다.

전통적인 설명에서 오행은 변화의 과정과 작용을 바라보는 다섯 범주로 사용됩니다.[1]

즉 목이 단순히 나무 한 그루만을 뜻하고, 화가 불꽃 하나만을 뜻하는 개념은 아닙니다.

지금은 이것을 현대 과학의 물질 분류처럼 이해할 필요도 없습니다.

오행은 변화를 설명하는 전통적인 개념 틀로 이해하면 됩니다.

다섯 범주는 서로 관계합니다

오행의 다섯 범주는 완전히 따로 떨어진 이름들로만 설명되지 않습니다.

전통적인 설명에서는 범주들이 서로 생성되거나 이어지는 관계, 그리고 서로를 제어하는 관계를 가진다고 설명합니다.[1]

하지만 지금은 어떤 오행이 어떤 오행을 생성하거나 제어하는지 외울 필요가 없습니다.

이 글에서는 구체적인 순서나 방향도 다루지 않습니다.

먼저 다섯 범주 사이에도 관계가 있다는 것만 기억하면 됩니다.

사주에서는 어디에서 볼까요?

사주를 이루는 천간과 지지는 각각 오행으로 분류됩니다.[2]

지금은 어떤 천간이나 지지가 목·화·토·금·수 가운데 어디에 속하는지 외울 필요는 없습니다.

먼저 오행이 사주의 글자들을 구분하는 기본적인 분류 가운데 하나라는 점만 알아두면 됩니다.

그리고 특정 오행 하나가 있다고 해서 그 사람의 성격이나 삶 전체가 정해지는 것은 아닙니다.

오행의 개수나 부족함만 보고 사람을 단정하는 것도 이 글에서 다루는 범위가 아닙니다.

Five names to begin with

Wood. Fire. Earth. Metal. Water.

These five names are the starting point of the Five Elements.[1]

For now, learning the five names is enough.

You do not need to memorize personality traits, colors, directions, or other meanings for each Element.

More than five physical things

The names can sound very literal.

Wood may make you think of a tree. Fire may make you think of a flame.

But the Five Elements are not treated only as five physical objects.

In traditional explanations, they are five categories used to describe processes and activity related to change.[1]

So Wood is not limited to physical timber, and Fire is not limited to a physical flame.

The Five Elements are better understood here as a traditional framework for describing change, not as a modern scientific classification of matter.

The five categories are related

The five categories are not explained as completely isolated names.

Traditional descriptions include relationships of generation or connection, as well as relationships of control, among them.[1]

You do not need to learn which Element generates or controls another yet.

This article also does not introduce a fixed order, direction, or cycle.

For now, the important point is simply that the five categories are also understood through their relationships.

Where do we see them in Saju?

The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches used in Saju are each classified according to the Five Elements.[2]

You do not need to memorize those individual assignments yet.

For now, remember that the Five Elements are one of the basic ways the Stems and Branches are organized.

One Element by itself does not define a person’s personality or whole life.

Counting Elements or deciding that someone has “too much” or “too little” of one Element belongs to a different level of interpretation and is not part of this introduction.
