The large structure is Four Pillars and Eight Characters
Saju is described through four pillars corresponding to year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar contains two characters, creating an eight-character structure.[1][2]
Once that larger structure is clear, Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, Yin/Yang, and the Five Elements do not need to be learned as isolated lists.
Each pillar contains a Stem-Branch pair
In the Gan-Zhi system, a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch form a paired unit.[2]
So before isolating one character, it is useful to notice which pillar it belongs to and which Stem or Branch appears with it.
This article does not move into detailed interaction rules such as combinations, clashes, punishments, breaks, or harms.
Yin/Yang and the Five Elements are languages for classification and relationship
Yin/Yang and the Five Elements are traditional conceptual frameworks used to classify symbols and discuss relationships and change.[3]
Yin and Yang are better understood as a relational and changing contrast than as two isolated substances. The Five Elements are likewise used as a framework of processes and relationships rather than simply five fixed materials.[3]
For that reason, a Yin/Yang or Five-Element classification attached to a chart symbol is not a ranking of a person's value or ability.
The Day Master is also only one reference point within the whole relationship
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar used as a traditional interpretive reference point.
A reference point does not replace the whole chart.
Even when the Day Master is used as the starting point, the relationships among the remaining seven characters, Stems, Branches, Yin/Yang, and the Five Elements must remain visible.
Seeing relationships does not automatically mean calculating good or bad fortune
Here, “relationship” means first understanding that chart components belong to one connected structure.
This article does not automatically proceed to hidden-stem operations, quantitative strength or balance scoring, detailed combination/clash rules, causal claims from Element excess or deficiency, structure classification, Yongshin, seasonal adjustment, or rooting.
Structural relationships alone do not determine personality, health, wealth, marriage, occupation, or future events.
